Paediatrics NEET PG Speciality: Course, Eligibility, Seats, Cutoff, Fees and Career Scope

Paediatrics is one of the most sought-after clinical specialities among NEET PG aspirants who enjoy working with children and want to build a career focused on preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic care from infancy through adolescence. The speciality covers a wide range of areas, including neonatology, growth and development, nutrition, infectious diseases, paediatric emergencies, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, endocrinology and genetics. This blog focuses on the 2025 All India Counselling process for the speciality.

For NEET PG aspirants, Paediatrics is also considered a high-yield subject. Recent preparation resources highlight neonatology, growth and development, nutrition, immunisation, paediatric infections, emergencies and image-based questions as important areas for examination preparation.

An MD in Paediatrics provides broad clinical training, while DNB Paediatrics offers an alternative postgraduate pathway through NBEMS-accredited institutions. Both routes can lead to clinical practice, academic careers, research and further super-specialisation.

What is Paediatrics?

Paediatrics is the branch of medicine concerned with the health and medical care of newborns, infants, children and adolescents. A paediatrician evaluates normal growth and development as well as acute and chronic illnesses affecting different organ systems.

The NMC's competency-based postgraduate curriculum for MD Paediatrics includes comprehensive training in clinical paediatrics, neonatology, growth and development, nutrition, infectious diseases, emergencies and other subspecialty areas.

Factors to Consider Before Choosing Paediatrics

Paediatrics can be a rewarding speciality, but it requires a strong interest in both medicine and working with children and families.

Consider the following before selecting the branch:

1. Interest in Children

Paediatric practice requires patience, empathy and the ability to communicate effectively with children of different ages.

2. Communication With Parents

A significant part of paediatric practice involves counselling parents and caregivers about diagnosis, treatment, nutrition, vaccination and follow-up.

3. Emergency Exposure

Paediatricians frequently encounter emergencies involving newborns and critically ill children. Candidates should be comfortable with urgent decision-making.

4. Neonatal and PICU Workload

If you enjoy high-acuity medicine, check the institution's neonatal ICU and PICU exposure before choosing a college.

5. Long-Term Career Goals

Consider whether you want to become a general paediatrician, pursue academics, enter research or specialise further in neonatology, paediatric cardiology, neurology, critical care or another area.

6. Work-Life Balance

Paediatrics can involve emergency calls, night duties and unpredictable workloads, particularly during residency and hospital-based practice.

7. Patient Load and Clinical Exposure

A college with a high paediatric patient load can provide extensive clinical exposure. Compare OPD attendance, inpatient admissions, NICU/PICU capacity and emergency workload.

8. College and Department Quality

Before locking a seat, evaluate:

  • Faculty strength

  • Department reputation

  • Clinical workload

  • NICU and PICU facilities

  • Academic teaching

  • Research opportunities

  • Stipend

  • Hostel facilities

  • Fees

  • Bond requirements

  • Super-speciality options
