NEET UG Counselling Seat Matrix 2026: State-wise MBBS Seats, New Colleges & Seat Increase

blog

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the NEET UG Seat Matrix 2026 for the academic year 2026-27 reflecting the number of approved MBBS seats in medical colleges across India. The seat matrix includes approved admissions in government and private medical colleges, newly set up colleges and colleges which were given permission to increase their MBBS intake capacity. As per the official notification, the released seat matrix does not include the seats available at the Institutes of National Importance (INIs) such as AIIMS and JIPMER.

With the latest NMC approval, India now has 823 medical colleges with 1,36,939 MBBS seats available for the academic year 2026-27 after approval of new colleges and additional seats in existing colleges. The published seat matrix may be revised if further approvals are granted by the competent authority before counselling.

What is the NEET UG Counselling Seat Matrix?

The NEET UG Counselling Seat Matrix is the official list of seats available for a particular round of NEET UG counselling. It is released by the counselling authority before the start of each counselling round and provides candidates with the exact number of seats available across participating medical colleges.

Unlike the NMC Seat Matrix, which shows the total approved intake of every medical college, the counselling seat matrix reflects the seats that are actually available for allotment in a specific round. It includes details such as the medical college, course, seat category, and the number of seats open for admission. Candidates use this matrix during choice filling to identify available colleges and make informed preferences.

How Does the NMC Seat Matrix Affect NEET Counselling?

The NMC Seat Matrix forms the foundation of the NEET UG counselling process by specifying the total number of MBBS seats approved for each medical college. Counselling authorities such as MCC and the respective state counselling bodies use this approved intake while preparing the round-wise counselling seat matrices.

For candidates, the NMC Seat Matrix serves as a reliable reference to understand the overall availability of MBBS seats, identify newly approved medical colleges, and track institutions that have received an increase in intake. However, the actual seats available during counselling may differ depending on factors such as seat reservations, counselling rounds, surrendered seats, and institutional participation. Therefore, while the NMC Seat Matrix provides the approved capacity, candidates should always refer to the latest counselling seat matrix released before each round to view the seats available for allotment.
